This month I celebrate my first anniversary of being a FUMSI contributing editor. A very busy year professionally for myself (and long may that continue), but also an exciting time in the world of information.
It is a delight and professionally satisfying to be working at FreePint for many reasons. I get to work with many varied experts in the information and publishing world, and I get to explore areas of my information professional world in ways that I had never imagined before.
Let me explain something that is quite important to me as a contributing editor. I am a FreePint user and have been for many years now. I use, and have used the resources in my own daily work and career development. When I find that my knowledge is sparse on topics, or I need help on a topic or just don't know where the heck to find something, I have found the answer via FreePint products.
When I am looking to commission articles as a FUMSI editor, apart from considering what the trends are in our business, I think about what I don't know. What is everyone talking about that I have no clue about? I always know what will help - a short precise article that provides explanations, tips, clues, 'how to' and 'how not'. In short, a FUMSI article.
In the past year I have tried to expand the scope of the Use practice area, by taking it into new uncharted territory for me and hopefully for you. I find the process of locating contributors interesting and also quite exciting - I like to track down experts by researching topic areas and reading about good practitioners, cutting edge work, experts in the field or unusual applications. I don't believe that I could run out of ideas for possible contributions - our information industry is so exciting and diverse it is hard to be bored by the range of topics.
But I also love it when people email me with their idea for a contribution too - and don't forget I can also help you shape up a contribution.
The four FUMSI practice areas always provide plenty of scope for diverse articles on a month to month basis - and this month is no exception. Finding experts in organisations, Using SharePoint in libraries, Managing apps for researchers and Sharing using URL shorteners. This is another interesting month for FUMSI readers - that would be you, and me!
Perhaps this is not the most creative editorial I have written for FUMSI, but it is definitely the most straightforward in how I feel about FreePint products. Yesterday I retweeted and thanked someone for a post about Scott Brown's article (July 2010) on repurposing information. I had a reply back saying that 'FreePint stuff is always aces, I always check out the magazines and find stuff I can use everyday'.
I think that sums up my feeling about FreePint too - it is 'aces'. And that is because we have great contributors and great readers - I just pull it together a little for Use. Looking forward to another 'aces' year!
Joanna Ptolomey is the contributing editor for the FUMSI 'Use' practice area.
This Use editorial appeared in FUMSI Magazine 32 (August 2010)
